Braintree High School
Celebrates 150 Years of Educational Excellence

To be sure, the 2007/2008 school year is historically significant at Braintree High School. In January, the town’s inaugural mayoral celebration was held at the high school, and most importantly, BHS celebrates 150 years of educational excellence.  Each day as we continue the 150 year old tradition, educators establish high expectations and provide our students with an exciting array of activities and learning opportunities. Indeed, the historical significance of this school year is unprecedented. Those who work each day at Braintree High School are proud to be part of this memorable year and of this remarkable institution.

Since the summer of 2007, the 150th BHS Celebration Committee has been researching and planning the commemoration of Braintree High School’s 150 years of education.

In 1858, the townspeople of Braintree celebrated the opening of a new town hall at French’s Common that would also serve as the location of the first high school. Charles Francis Adams Sr, son of John Quincy Adams, delivered a lengthy, yet eloquent address at the event, speaking to the importance of education in our town and in our society.  An unfortunate fire in 1911 moved the high school to the site of the Monatoquot School and soon the planning was underway to build a comprehensive modern high school which opened in 1927, at the site of the present “old high school” at the intersection of West Street and Washington St.  This building served the expanding needs of our community and established the excellence in education that we hold as a tradition in the town to this day.  In 1972, the “new high school” opened on the land adjacent to Sunset Lake where the strong tradition and values in learning continue to prosper today.  Times have changed, yet the tradition and history of Braintree’s commitment to education continues to flourish.

On Thursday, April 17th, 2008, the Braintree Community celebrated our town’s 150 years of storied educational excellence.  A dinner at the Sons of Italy in Braintree, acknowledged this historical journey.  State and local dignitaries joined Mayor Joseph Sullivan, educators past and present  from the Braintree Public Schools, alumni, students and community members in acknowledging Braintree’s commitment to learning.  Braintree High School alumnus, Jim Calhoun, the current University of Connecticut’s men’s basketball coach, was the guest speaker.  Our current BHS students participated in the ceremony reflecting on the significant historical events of BHS.
